Pest Demise Pest Control | Adelaide Hills, South Australia
From 24 March 2026, new restrictions apply to second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs) in Australia. These changes, introduced by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA), aim to reduce the risk of secondary poisoning and better protect native wildlife, pets and children.
At Pest Demise Pest Control, we take responsible rodent management seriously and follow applicable product requirements to help protect your home, family and surrounding environment.
The new requirements apply to products containing brodifacoum, bromadiolone, difenacoum, difethialone and flocoumafen.
Key changes include:
Tamper-resistant bait stations: Rodent bait must be secured in appropriate tamper-resistant stations, fixed to a suitable surface or structure as required.
Outdoor placement restrictions: SGAR baits cannot be used for outdoor mouse control. Outdoor rat baiting is restricted to within two metres of buildings and must comply with the applicable station and weather-protection requirements.
Treatment duration: Continuous treatment is limited to 35 days for an infestation under the applicable requirements. Further activity requires reassessment and appropriate professional advice.
Dead rodent removal: Regular checks and safe removal of rodent carcasses help reduce the risk of secondary poisoning to pets and wildlife, including owls and birds of prey.
Product access and use: Additional regulatory controls are being developed for these products. Requirements may vary depending on the product and applicable state and territory rules.
These measures are designed to encourage safer, more responsible rodent control practices.
Rodents can contaminate food, damage property, chew electrical wiring and establish nests in roof voids and wall cavities.
Professional rodent management involves identifying signs of activity, inspecting potential entry points, selecting appropriate control methods and monitoring results.
At Pest Demise Pest Control, we provide residential rodent inspections and treatment throughout the Adelaide Hills, including Nairne and Mount Barker.
If you have noticed scratching noises in the roof, rodent droppings or signs of gnawing, early investigation can help prevent a small problem from becoming a larger infestation.

Rodent Infestations in South Australia: Identification, Impact & Control
Driven by the need for food and shelter, rodents frequently invade both homes and businesses. Correctly identifying the species—such as mice or rats—is critical, as each has unique behaviours and nesting preferences. At Pest Demise pest control I tailor our approach by using a combination of live traps for removal and or baits, and exclusion techniques, depending on the rodent type and the severity of the infestation.
Successful rodent management starts with full thorough inspections, ongoing monitoring, and a strong focus on long-term prevention to reduce the risk of recurring problems.
Rodents are a highly adaptable group of mammals found worldwide, including throughout South Australia. This article is for your information regarding rodent species that are mostly encountered in the region of the Adelaide Hills, highlighting their physical traits, behaviours, habitats, and the reasons they are considered pests in areas like Adelaide.

After a prescribed time by our technician, we’ll follow-up with a call for feedback on the rodent situation. If further treatments are required we will return until rodent activity stops completely.
